The big picture

Sometimes you have a really high quality image that you want to show off, you carefully enlarge it as much as you dare before it starts to pixellate, you save it and then it reduces down to 700 pixels wide!  Why?

To reduce the chances of exceeding your bandwidth we limit all images to 700 pixels in any dimension, because the larger the image the more bandwidth is used. For example an image 700 pixel x 700 pixel would be 300Kb, but at 1000 pixels by 1000 pixels it becomes 600Kb, with not a great deal of difference on screen.

This is only a general rule of thumb, the content of a jpeg will affect the final size, but it is a good approximation.

Also, there are still dial-up users out there, a huge image will take minutes to download and you risk losing the interest of your reader (unless they've got a cup of tea).

You really, really need to use that huge image?
There may be good reason for wanting to use an image larger than 700 pixels, so do please ring us and we will try and help.
